Caterham comes with a new variant of the Seven. The Caterham Seven 170 is a feather-light fun machine with a 660 cc small three-cylinder Suzuki under the hood.
Caterham came up with the Seven 160/165 in 2013, a version of the Seven with a very modest power source. That car is now being succeeded by the Caterham Seven 170. In the long nose of the Lotus Seven-inspired Caterham 170, just like in the 160/165, is a 660 cc small three-cylinder from Suzuki, a machine that normally powers Suzuki’s kei cars. . The motor generates a modest 85 hp and 116 Nm of torque, but has only 440 kilos to move. With that small power source, the Seven 170 is able to reach a speed of 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Its top speed is just over 160 km/h.
The Caterham Seven 170 is not only light, it is also remarkably narrow. With a width of 1.47 meters it is by far the narrowest Caterham of the moment. The next narrowest Caterham Seven is more than 10 centimeters wider. That’s not easy. With its compact dimensions and small three-cylinder engine, the Seven 170 is a kei-car according to Japanese tax legislation. Of course, this provides substantial tax benefits on the Japanese market.
CO2 emissions are a modest 109 g/km. You can decorate the Seven 170 with, among other things, alloy wheels and LED lighting. In addition, Caterham offers the Seven 170 as a 170S and as a 170R. The Seven 170S has a five-speed manual transmission, a softer tuned chassis, a full windscreen, leather seats and side screens. The Seven 170R is the stripped-down version of the set with a sports suspension, bucket seats with four-point belts, a limited slip differential and a carbon fiber dashboard. The Seven 170 costs as a kit car converted €26,876.
