Successor to Seven 275
Caterham presented us with the wonderfully basic Seven 170 with a tiny three-cylinder in the nose just over a year ago. Now its stronger brother, the Seven 275, is due for replacement, according to Caterham. See here: the Caterham Seven 340.
Caterham knows better than anyone that you don’t necessarily need a lot of power to experience a lot of driving pleasure. Last year it came up with the Seven 170, the umpteenth modern interpretation of the Lotus Seven, but now with a 660 cc three-cylinder from Suzuki in the nose. Due to the limited weight of the Seven 170, the small power source is good for a 0 to 100 km/h sprint that takes only 6.9 seconds, which is not surprising. If you think that’s a bit too mild and you prefer a more robust engine, you could sign up for the Seven 275. It will now be replaced by the Seven 340.
Where the Caterham Seven 275 still had a 1.6 four-cylinder from Ford in its long nose, the Caterham Seven 340 gets a 2.0. Again a four-cylinder and again from the shelves of Ford. As you might have expected, the larger engine delivers more power. The Caterham Seven 340 has 172 hp and 174 Nm to play with, its predecessor had to make do with 135 hp. The Seven 340 only weighs about 560 kilos, so you can imagine that the power makes it a bloody fast thing. The sprint time is not yet known, but count on about 4.5 seconds to shoot from 0 to 100 km/h. The top speed is 209 km/h. The Caterham Seven 340 comes as S, the basic version, but also as the more track-oriented R. In the latter case you have a limited slip differential, sportier suspension, four-point belts and a carbon fiber dashboard.
The Caterham Seven 340 S costs at least €45,700 excluding taxes, the 340 R will be available from €47,200 excl.
