There should be stricter control over the nearly nine thousand driving school holders in the Netherlands, Alexander Pechtold, director of the Central Bureau for Driving Skills (CBR), pleads for this on Thursday. AD.
Driving schools have too much freedom, according to the former D66 leader. As a result, candidates are often insufficiently trained. “If we want substantially fewer road fatalities, it is inevitable that driving schools will be certified and meet stricter requirements.”
“They will not thank me, but there are too many cowboys. They attract turbo-trained youngsters who do not train them to be responsible drivers, but guide them through the exam as smoothly as possible,” says Pechtold. As a result, the success rate is currently only 48 percent. According to the CBR director, 75 percent should be achievable.
Pechtold has been working as a director since 1 November last year. He was appointed to lead the CBR through a difficult period. It’s been messing around for a while. For example, there are extremely long waiting lists for seniors who want to apply for an extension of their driving license.
