Changing market: ‘Jaguar Land Rover postpones EVs and brings PHEVs forward’

Have you noticed it too? The EV market is starting to cool down a bit and the comments that can be made about the fully electric car are receiving more attention than ever. Jaguar Land Rover has not missed this, and says it will pay slightly more attention to plug-in hybrids, at the expense of EVs.

Really, Jaguar Land Rover is still ambitious when it comes to EVs. For example, there is still a fully electric Range Rover and according to the latest reports it should arrive this year. This will be followed by a fully electric Range Rover Sport and then it is the turn of the smaller models, which are on a new EMA platform and can be seen as replacements for the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar. An electric Defender is also in the pipeline and the Jaguar brand is still expected to be restarted in 2025, this time in a fully electric form.

And yet… interest in EVs also seems to have cooled off a bit at JLR. CEO Adrian Mardell reportedly indicated in conversations with investors that the timeline for the introduction of those EVs has been slightly extended. For example, there will be not six, but four electric Land Rover models between now and 2026, Automotive News Europe reports following the conversation. Instead, the British (Indian-owned) car company said it would work hard to make as many plug-in hybrids available as possible. According to Mardell, that is what the market is unexpectedly demanding.

According to JLR, the slight delay obviously does not mean that JLR’s attention has slackened when it comes to EVs. Mardell offers another reason for the delay of some electric models: “We are taking our time to ensure we bring the best vehicles we have ever developed to market.” We told you JLR is ambitious, right?
