Newly built neighborhoods in Arnhem will receive standard lampposts with two charging points for electric cars during construction. In this way, the municipality wants to respond to the growing demand for charging points and put an end to the proliferation of charging stations along the street.

The number of electric cars is increasing rapidly. So more charging points are also needed. Until now, charging points in Arnhem were installed on request afterwards, as soon as there was a need in a district. This not only meant more bollards along the street, but also made it difficult to fit the charging infrastructure into the electricity network and public space without any problems. Moreover, such a parking space was then reserved for electric cars, which occasionally led to resentment in the neighbourhood.
No more reserved parking spaces for electric cars
Arnhem therefore chooses to include charging points in new housing developments in the design. Then they can be integrated into lampposts, so that there are fewer posts on the sidewalk. It also allows early consultation with the grid operator, so that no capacity problems arise on the grid. The charging stations receive their power from a solar park that will be built in 2022. The parking spaces near the lampposts are not reserved for EVs.

Arnhem starts new Schuytgraaf district with 300 charging points
The municipality – which itself is investing 485,000 euros in the project – is starting construction in the Schuytgraaf district in Arnhem-South. There will initially be 150 lampposts with 300 charging points. Many more will follow later, in other new neighborhoods, but also in existing neighbourhoods. In the latter case, the municipality will consult with neighborhoods about the placement of the charging points.
