The American Purdue University developed an experimental technology for future space missions with funding from NASA. The technology is intended to cool equipment in space, but could also be used to cool the cables while charging electric vehicle batteries, according to NASA. Fully charging an electric car would therefore take less than five minutes.
Scientists at the American University Purdue developed cooling technology for charging cables with funding from NASA, which allows the amount of electrical current that chargers pass to be increased to about 1,400 amps. At the moment, a maximum of 520 amps can still be pumped into an EV battery, but the bottleneck is in charging. A Tesla Supercharger can reach a maximum current of 180 amps, while standard chargers usually can’t even handle 150 amps. In fact, the Purdue charging cable was able to deliver 2,400 amps during the experiments, much more than the 1,400 amps needed to reduce the charging time to five minutes.
The scientists managed to deliver 4.6 times more power to an electric vehicle’s battery than the fastest cable today, thanks to the new cooling technology that can remove up to 24.22 kilowatts of heat, according to NASA. The technology uses a cooled liquid, which can extract more heat from the charging cables, thus avoiding overheating.
