‘Charging point rates sometimes even differ considerably in the same street’

Transparency still not in order

‘Charging point rates sometimes even differ considerably in the same street’

It can sometimes differ quite a bit in the same place or even the same street per charging station what you pay. This is according to research by the Consumer Association. It is also still not always transparent everywhere what you pay per kWh.

Both with and without a charge card (with a variable rate), the prices for public charging of electric cars can vary greatly. For example, in Hoofddorp a charging station costs 28 cents more per kWh than one that is 200 meters away. A difference of no less than €14 with a charging session of 50 kWh in total. There are also significant differences between different cities. In Amsterdam, The Hague or Nijmegen you are on average 33 cents per kWh. In Almere and Haarlem you pay almost double: 61 cents. Not only that; dozens of cities have one provider, which gives it a monopoly position.

It is a legal obligation to be transparent about the prices of public charging stations, but it is by no means always clear how much the top-up costs. The director of the Consumer Association explains according to NU.nl: “We checked dozens of poles, but QR codes don’t always seem to work. You don’t end up with the rates or you have to register first. That’s cumbersome.” A possible solution is to use a charge card with a lower fixed rate, although according to the Consumers’ Association it is quite a job to find out what is the best deal for you. There are hundreds of charge cards and each has its own cost structure and conditions.
