Charging stations in Gelderland will soon be able to switch off in the event of a power shortage

In several municipalities in Gelderland and Utrecht, charging stations may soon be switched off if the power network is overloaded.

The 191 charging stations will be managed by Park&Charge and will be ‘grid-conscious charging’. This means that less or no electricity flows to the poles when less electricity is available. The charging stations are located in the Gelderland municipalities of Apeldoorn, Barneveld, Ede, Nijkerk, Nijmegen, Overbetuwe, Rheden, Scherpenzeel, Wageningen and Zevenaar and Veenendaal in Utrecht. This is one of the first projects in the Netherlands where the charging stations are sometimes turned off. The province of Utrecht also announced this last month in order to spare the power grid at times when a lot of electricity is being used.

According to Park&Charge, occasionally switching off the charging stations does not have any negative consequences for people who charge their cars. “The electric driver is usually not bothered by this, because the car is often at the charging station long enough to fully charge the battery. You can also charge electric cars at other times, if there is space available.” According to Park&Charge, by renewing charging stations, more charging stations can be added more quickly, which the company believes is necessary to be able to charge all electric cars by 2030.
