Model 2 on the way?
The Tesla Model 3 will not be Tesla’s entry-level model for much longer. Tesla has plans to come up with a more affordable EV that will be positioned one step below the Model 3. That cheaper Tesla should arrive in the first half of next year.
In March, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla would launch a cheaper model next year. The cheaper Tesla – which we will call Model 2 for convenience – should have a starting price of about $25,000 in the United States. It looks like that Tesla is now coming earlier than initially planned.
According to Tesla, it brings forward the introduction moments of ‘new models’. This would concern new models, including lower positioned EVs. According to Tesla, these newcomers are built from both new and existing hardware and can be assembled on the same production lines as the brand’s current models. The first newcomer would go into production in the second half of 2025, but Tesla is also bringing that forward. So it seems that the cheaper ‘Model 2’ will also arrive sooner. In August – when Tesla presents its Robotaxi – it will release more information about the arrival of the entry-level Tesla.
The haste that Tesla is making seems to be related to the brand’s slump in deliveries. In the first quarter of this year, Tesla delivered 386,810 cars worldwide. 8.5 percent less than in the same period last year. This made the first quarter of 2024 Tesla’s worst delivery quarter since the third quarter of 2023.
