Fancy a game of chess, but no opponent nearby? Play against the computer or any opponent on the Mac with the Chess app.

Chess has been a popular board game for centuries. A lot has changed in that time. Nowadays, the opponents no longer have to sit opposite each other at the chessboard. Chess can now also be played on the computer. On the Mac, the Chess app comes by default. With this you play a game against the computer or against a human opponent.
Chess App
Open the Chess app as follows:
- Open Finder by clicking the smiley face icon
on the dock. - In the left pane, click apps.
- Double click on chess.
- click on Continue.
- Enter a nickname if you want and click again Continue.
Play
It’s time to start with the first jar. At the top of the window is who is playing against whom.
- Click on the chess piece you want to move and then on the square where the piece should go. It is also possible to click on the chess piece and then drag the chess piece with the mouse. The piece moved. The opponent also moves a chess piece.
- Curious about all party information? Click in the menu bar on To make > party progress. This shows who is playing and what moves they made.
- Regret a move? Then take it back by clicking at the top of the menu To make > take back.
- Are you no longer able to figure it out? It is possible to ask for a tip. Click at the top of the menu To make > Show clue. An arrow appears on the board to indicate a possible move.
- If desired, the computer indicates via speech which moves the players are making, which pieces are captured and when it is check or checkmate. Click in the menu bar on chess > Preferences and check under ‘Speech’ which information you want to hear.
New game
The first game is over. Follow the steps below for a new game:
Click at the top of the menu Side.
click on New.
We’ll leave ‘Variant’ set to ‘Normal’.
Click on the drop-down menu behind ‘Players’. Choose the options you want. The options are:
- ‘Person vs. Person’ to play against someone sitting next to you or against yourself.
- ‘Person against computer’ to play with the white chess pieces against the computer.
- ‘Computer against person’ to play with the black chess pieces against the computer.
- ‘Computer against computer’ to see how the computer plays against itself.
- “Game Center Match” to play against (any) anyone online via Game Center (more on Game Center below).
- click on Start.
The game starts. Unless you chose ‘Game Center match’. In that case a new window will appear. click on Start now to play against any person. Playing chess with a famous person? Then click on add and send an invitation. Select a contact via the plus sign, after which you click on Invite and start.
Save game
It is possible to save a game and continue playing at a later time.
- Click at the top of the menu Side.
- click on Keep.
- Type a name.
- If necessary, adjust the location via the drop-down menu.
- click on Keep.
Open the game again as follows:
- Click at the top of the menu Side.
- click on Open.
- A Finder window opens. Find the game here and click on it.
- click on Open.
Game Center
The Chess app is linked to Game Center. This is a service from Apple to arrange options for games on Apple devices. Think of inviting opponents, opening saved games and viewing scores. Once you sign in to the Mac (or other Apple device) with an Apple ID, a Game Center account is created. View this account by clicking an apple icon > System Preferences > Internet accounts. The Game Center account is in the left pane. The first time the Chess app opens, the app indicates that it is using Game Center.
