China overtakes Japan

Chinese car exports are on the rise. Last April, 70 percent more Chinese cars shipped abroad than the same month last year, pushing China back to number 2 in the world’s No. 1 car exporter, Japan.

Last month, Chinese automakers exported 376,000 cars, up 1.7 times from the same month last year, China Daily reports. In the first four months of 2023, 1.37 million Chinese cars went abroad, an increase of more than 89 percent compared to last year. 348,000 of them were electrified, according to figures from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

The trade association has also calculated that 1.07 million Chinese cars were exported in the first quarter of 2023, compared to 954,000 Japanese cars, with which China – at least over that period – has surpassed Japan as number 1.

The Chinese cars mainly went to Southeast Asia, South America, the Middle East and of course Europe. Top man Xu Haidong of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers notes that the intention is to involve export countries more in the production and supply of Chinese cars in the future.
