Chinese car imports to Europe more than doubled

Although there is now some noticeable resistance and the European Union is starting an investigation into possible unfair competition, the import of Chinese cars is still on the rise. Very sturdy, we might say.

According to Bloomberg, a total of 91,000 electric and partially electric cars were shipped from China to Europe in September. That is an increase of no less than 107 percent compared to September 2022, or more than doubling. When compiling these figures, the Chinese Passenger Car Association looked purely at the number of cars that went from China to Europe. The country of origin of the car brand in question was not included, which also explains why Tesla was the largest exporter of ‘Chinese’ cars to Europe with 30,566 units. The Tesla Model 3 is made in Shanghai for the European market and until recently this also applied to the very popular Model Y.

Other major players in Chinese exports to Europe are BYD and SAIC, the latter responsible for MG brand cars. In September, the European Commission announced an investigation into possible ‘dumping’ by Chinese car manufacturers. She is afraid that the prices of Chinese cars in Europe are being kept artificially low by Chinese subsidies, creating unfair competition with car brands from other parts of the world.
