‘Chip shortage is not over yet’

‘Chip shortage is not over yet’

The global chip shortage hit the car industry hard in 2021. Anyone who had hoped that things would get much better in 2022 will probably be disappointed.

At least that is the expectation of AutoForecast Solutions. The vice president of the American research firm, Sam Fiorani, expects the shortage to continue to grip the auto industry in 2022. “We are seeing some improvement in some automakers, but the problem will not be over in the short term,” he said. Automotive News. The big problem, he says, is that the expansion of production capacity is not bearing fruit quickly: “It will take another two or three years before that has an effect on the supply.”

Many automakers no longer venture into predictions about the chip shortage and its effect on production schedules. Audi CEO Markus Duesmann is one of the few who still occasionally analyzes it. He stated in November that the production deficit cannot be completely made up and that the chip supply will probably not stabilize until well into 2022. Stellantis also seemed reasonably optimistic in October that it would stabilize in 2022. Around the same time, Ford itself seemed to be doing better, but Ford is also dealing with delays again. The same applies to Toyota, which returned to its old production level in November.
