If you use Google Chrome on a daily basis, there’s a good chance you’ve gotten into the habit of using certain keyboard shortcuts to speed it up.
Among the most used shortcuts, and the best known to users, there is Ctrl + T, to open a new tab, or Ctrl + J to access the browser’s download manager.
But Chrome has a large number of keyboard shortcuts that, once known and mastered, will allow you to better use the browser and gain speed. Here is the list of essential keyboard shortcuts to know for Google Chrome.
Shortcuts for windows and tabs:
- Ctrl + N: open a new window
- Ctrl + Shift + N: open a new incognito window
- Ctrl + T: open a new tab
- Ctrl + Shift + T: reopen previously closed tabs
- Ctrl + Tab / Ctrl + Shift + Tab: move to next tab / move to previous tab
- Ctrl + 1 to 9: access a specific tab (from the first to the ninth)
- Ctrl + W or Ctrl + F4: close the active tab
- Ctrl + Shift + W or Alt + F4: close the active window
The shortcuts for the address bar:
- Ctrl + Enter: automatically adds www. and .com in the name of the site and open it in the active tab
- Ctrl + Shift + Enter: automatically adds www. and .com in the name of the site and opens it in a new tab
- Ctrl + l: activate the cursor in the address bar
- Ctrl + K: launch a query on Google in the address bar
- Down arrow then Shift + Del: delete the predictions displayed in the address bar
Shortcuts for Chrome functions:
- Ctrl + Shift + B: show or hide the bookmarks bar
- Ctrl + Shift + O: open the favorites manager
- Ctrl + H: open browsing history
- Ctrl + J: open the download manager
Shortcuts linked to open web pages:
- Ctrl + P: Print the open page
- Ctrl + S: Save the open page
- Ctrl + R or F5: Refresh the page
- Ctrl + Shift + R or Shift + F5: refresh the page without taking into account the browser cache
- Ctrl + O: open a file in the browser
- Ctrl + D: add the current page to favorites

- F11: use full screen mode
- Ctrl + + / Ctrl + – or Ctrl + up or down mouse wheel: zoom in or out in the page
- Ctrl + 0: reset zoom level to 100%

- Click with the scroll wheel or Ctrl + Click on a link: opens the link in a new tab in the background
- Ctrl + Shift + click on a link: opens and displays the link in a new tab
- Shift + click on a link: opens the link in a new window
- Shift + wheel: scroll the content of a page horizontally
- Alt + click on a link: download the link target
- Right click on the Next or Previous button: view recent browsing history
