We understand nothing of the former Fiat Chrysler group, which slowly let most of its brands bleed to death. Just look at the condition of Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati and also the American Chrysler. The latter manufacturer only supplies two models: the elderly Pacifica and the ancient 300. So hopefully the electric Chrysler Airflow can lift the brand from the sandbank where it is now stuck.
Fiat Chrysler merged with Groupe PSA (Citroën, DS, Opel, Peugeot) last year to form the merger company Stellantis. And that’s a good thing. Because in the coming years, French money will finally be invested in the moribund Italian and American brands. For example, this new Airflow is ready for Chrysler. Although the question is whether the model will come on the market in this guise. Chrysler reports that it will only come up with its first electric car in three years. Richly late. But after that it goes fast, that’s the plan. By 2028, Chrysler’s entire lineup should consist of EVs.
Chrysler Airflow was a 1930s pioneer
The Airflow Concept harks back to the Chrysler Airflow from the 1930s with its name. That was a pioneer in the field of streamlining, but unfortunately did not bring Chrysler any success. Ninety years ago, the public was not interested in the smoothly stylized car and kept a close eye on it. However, the influence of the Airflow was great. In Europe, manufacturers successfully copied the design, as can be seen in the Peugeot 402, the Renault 1935/16 and the Volvo PV36 Carioca.
New Airflow won’t be on the market until 2025
The new Airflow is Chrysler’s first modern electric car. It is powered by a pair of electric motors, with a combined output of 402 hp, and should be able to reach a range of up to 645 kilometers. At first glance, the Airflow Concept looks very production-ready, but as said: Chrysler still needs three years to make it suitable for sale. The car would be much too late for Europe, but since it is mainly intended for the American market, Chrysler can take the time. The EV is not yet so accepted there.
