Citroën CX (1979) – In the Wild

Few Citroëns appeal to the imagination as much as the CX. A copy like this, with some external flaws here and there, is certainly an imposing appearance in today’s street scene.

Ask someone to name his or her favorite Citroën and there is a good chance that it will be called the CX. After all, that is one of the most talked-about models that the brand has ever produced and that says something at Citroën. Although it seemed an almost impossible task, the CX succeeded wonderfully in filling the void left by the DS after 1975. In a contemporary way, the CX continued the line of its predecessor, with the hydropneumatic suspension system, celebrated for its unparalleled comfort, and the particularly streamlined carriage. Designer Robert Opron had achieved a feat: the design proved to be extremely durable and only after more than ten years was a significant facelift for the CX.

This copy spotted by colleague Lars Krijgsman is from well before the facelift, because it dates from 1979. The fact that it is such an old car is especially easy to see from the chromed bumpers, because with the facelift the CX received somewhat larger plastic copies. Such a pre-facelift, with its chrome accents, has a slightly more elegant appearance than the later ones, although this specific CX is not necessarily easy to spot. We see some spots here and there that need attention and there is also a color difference that cannot be missed. But hey, a CX doesn’t have to be perfect to steal the show on the street.

We are dealing with a CX imported in 2009 and surprisingly enough, it is actually not a very special version. It is a 2.0 Athena and it was one of the cheapest CXs at the time. It may have come to the Netherlands mainly because of its condition. Apart from a rust spot on the rear screen, it still looks quite hard and that is certainly not an unnecessary luxury for a CX. The love between the first Dutch owner and the CX was unfortunately short-lived; After a few months it went to the second one and the CX remained there for almost twelve years. The French beauty has now been with his current owner for almost eight months and still has a year’s MOT to the day. So keep driving, or should we say gracefully floating?
