Modest splendour
With the beautiful sunny days we are currently experiencing, we have to pay extra attention to see if a nice classic pops up here and there. For example, this Citroën ID showed itself outside!
The month of March has started and that is typically one of those moments when you can almost smell spring on the one hand (especially with the sun of now) but the temperatures remind you that winter is not over yet. That also means that many classics will remain inside for a while. That does not apply to this Citroën ID, which was probably conjured up from winter storage for the first time this year for a sunny ride. AutoWeek forum member Karmann Ghia spotted it and shared the photos in our spotter thread.
The Citroën ID was the cheaper brother of the DS and that is nicely reflected on this 1966 copy. It not only looks simpler than a DS from the same year, but in a sense also a bit older. Due to its single headlights and the lack of side moldings, you could also think in passing that you are dealing with a DS from the 1950s. The front bumper with the black rosettes on it is the clearest hint that it is a bit less old. That shows that it is a ‘second nose’ ID, only you could also get it with the somewhat more modern-looking double headlights, just like the DS.
It also looks like an ID that has ‘a spot’ here and there. That is refreshing in a way, because the IDs and certainly the DSs that still pop up today have usually been restored to perfection. The fact that it is not completely spotless does not mean that it is not well cared for. You can bet that it takes a lot of love to keep it running and it looks like the rust devil has also been neatly kept out. In any case, there is real love: the person who put this ID on a Dutch license plate in 2002 still owns it. Chapeau et bon voyage!
