The sale of light and heavy commercial vehicles has been on the rise in the past year. This is reported by industry organizations Bovag and the RAI Association. In particular, the number of registrations of electric vans increased sharply, partly thanks to the purchase subsidy that was introduced in 2021.
Of the sales total in 2021, the light commercial vehicles are the big winner. Compared to 2020, the number of new delivery vans registered increased by 13.3 percent to 68,443 units. For heavy commercial vehicles, that number rose by 8.2 percent to 12,082 units. The industry argues that these numbers could have been even higher if the chip shortage hadn’t thrown a spanner in the works. The worldwide disruption of logistics due to the corona pandemic would also contribute to this.
A large increase in sales can be seen for electric delivery vans. In 2021, 3,177 new zero-emission delivery vans were registered, compared to 1,680 in 2020. That is an increase of no less than 89.1 percent. According to the sector, this strong increase is due to the purchase subsidy introduced last year for electric delivery vans that entrepreneurs could use. Entrepreneurs would then receive a compensation of €5,000 if they bought such a delivery van. Nevertheless, there is still something to be gained, because in total emission-free delivery vans only take up 4.6 percent of the sales pie. The best-selling electric van of 2021 is the Toyota Proace Electric, of which 797 copies rolled out of the showroom, according to Toyota.
There was much less of a storm with the emission-free trucks. In 2021, a total of 219 electric trucks and 45 hydrogen-powered trucks were registered. In 2020 that was a total of 487 copies. According to the Bovag, this decrease is because entrepreneurs are waiting for a purchase subsidy for these trucks.
