Volvo will be launching a compact electric car in the near future. That has the brand according to Automotive News confirmed. The EV is on the new base of parent company Geely.
Volvo wants to focus more on electrically powered cars in the coming years. Although it also gets an EV in the showroom with the XC40 Recharge P8, models on a basis specially intended for EVs really have to make a big change. The SEA basis (Sustainable Experience Architecture), to be precise. It debuts with the production version of the Lynk & Co Zero, which was unveiled at the end of last month. As we said at the time, that car is an important prelude to Volvo’s electric future.
The first Volvo model to sit on this modular basis will be a ‘compact car’, it reports Automotive News based on information from the Swedish manufacturer. It is not yet possible to say when that car will arrive, although previous plans showed that the first ‘dedicated EV‘should appear in 2022. So for the time being we will stick to that year. It will be a model under the XC40. In the corridors there is already talk of the ‘XC20’, although Volvo does not want to go so far as to call it an ‘SUV’ through CEO Samuelsson. However, the chance that it will be a model high on its wheels seems high. After all, sales statistics show that this is a recipe for success.
