From 2025, a series of extra compact electric MEB models from the Volkswagen group will appear. Seat is taking the lead in that project, but the Seat brand could well be behind the net for this car.
That news raises some eyebrows. Seat is in fact extensively put forward as the driving force for Volkswagen’s compact EV project, which should deliver a series of models of roughly Ibiza format from 2025. It was therefore widely assumed, and also by us, that this will be the first MEB car under the Seat brand name, after the Seat El-Born concept from 2019 had already been launched. dried up like Cupra. However, according to Automotive News Europe, the same fate awaits the smaller EV.
Responsible
Seat SA as a company is indeed responsible for that car, but according to this source, the model will only be carried as Cupra. This is of course the production version of the recently presented Urban Rebel Concept. Count on a hatchback with some crossover features, and especially without the gigantic rear wing of that concept car.
Ambitions
Whether and when Seat will be allocated an MEB model, is of course not yet clear in this rumor phase. Cupra seems to be getting an increasing role within the Seat company and also has more concrete electrical ambitions than the brand from which it originated.
Martorell
Seat wants to build 500,000 cars from this compact MEB family every year at its factory in Martorell, near Barcelona. This concerns not only the own Cupra (or Seat), but also cars of the other brands within the group. What the arrival of these models means for the cars that are now being built in Martorell is not yet clear. Seat currently produces almost all of its models here, with the exception of the Mii and the Alhambra based on cars from other brands.
