Compact photos with Imagine

Compact photos with Imagine

You like to take pictures of all memorable events. Fine, but after a while your photo archive takes up a lot of space. You can then consider saving the photos more compactly, for example with the free Imagine.

Step 1

The open source Imagine photo compressor is available for Linux, macOS and Windows. You can find the latter via www.tiny.cc/imag.

Step 2

The idea is to drag the photos into the window. This can be individual photos, but also a complete photo folder (both jp(e)g and png). You will see a thumbnail image of each photo.

Step 3

Each photo has a slider that reduces the quality slightly. You read off the space gain that this yields. So it is possible to choose a custom quality for each photo. Click the arrow button to set the output format: jpg, png or webp.

Step 4

Via the button at the top right you can determine the global settings for jpg, png and webp. Click on the photo to see the result before and after the compression. Use the plus and minus buttons to zoom in or out. You can save a photo via the arrow button above the photo. Or you use the menu Save to save all photos at once. You might do well to Save as to choose or Auto save under a new name. If everything looks good, you can delete the original photos.
