Ital design concept

The Italian design house Italdesign presents a modern interpretation of a study model from no less than 50 years ago. Meet the Asso di Picche in Movimento, an electric coupe with which Italdesign nods to its history.

It has been a while since drawing masters from the Italian Italdesign presented a new study model. Although the design house is not yet presenting a real concept car, it is releasing the design sketches of its conceptual newcomer, called Asso di Picche in Movimento. In doing so, Italdesign nods to perhaps one of its most important concept cars: the ‘Audi’ Asso di Piche that was presented in 1973.

So rewind a bit. The ‘Audi’ Asso di Picche was a study model for which Italdesign put the lines on paper on behalf of coachbuilder Karmann. Karmann – who had been working for brands such as Volkswagen and Audi for years – was eager to produce a new model and asked Italdesign to draw a coupe based on the Audi 80 (B1). That became the angular Asso di Picche, complete with an interesting window, angular shapes and Audi badges. There was no production version from Audi, but parts of the design survived and returned to Volkswagen on the first generation Scirocco. You can also see design elements from the Asso di Picche in the first generations of Lotus Esprit and Lancia Delta, drawn by Italdesign.

The references to the 1973 Asso di Picche are obvious.

It is now 50 years later and Italdesign believes the time is right to honor the Asso di Picche. It has this Asso di Picche in Movimento in the development rooms. Just like the original, this is an angularly designed coupe with a very flat windshield. In the design of the front and rear and in the cooling opening in the front lid, you will see references to the 50-year-old study model. Obviously no Audi 80 technology under this newcomer. Italdesign describes the Asso di Picche in Movimento – of which AutoWeek can also show you the patent drawings – as an electric 2+2 Coupé. In the back there should – with some pressing work – still be room for two probably very small children. The concept car is 4.66 meters long, 1.95 meters wide and only 1.23 meters high. The body is made of aluminum and the window and roof appear to visually form one whole.

Whether this Asso di Picche in Movimento is also popular with Audi or Volkswagen? Who knows. We are especially curious about your opinion!
