‘We continue where others stop’. It is a popular claim in the advertising world, but it really applies to Toyota. That presents a completely new Aygo, where many other brands leave the A-segment. This is the Toyota Aygo X!

Among the brands that are giving up are also Peugeot and Citroën. The 108 and C1 with which the current Aygo shares its base will not return and so Toyota is alone in this segment for the first time. However, the A-segment as we know it is a purely European affair and so the new Aygo X is also very European. Not only is it traditionally built in the Czech Republic, but it has also been completely developed by Toyota’s European branch. A first, the Japanese proudly report.

Significantly bigger

The ‘X’ in the Aygo’s name is of course the first news. Toyota states that we should pronounce it as ‘Cross’. Why it doesn’t just say ‘cross’ is a mystery, though, since that is the case with a Yaris Cross. Either way, the X naturally stands for a more crossover-esque look. The Aygo as a whole is 5 cm higher than its predecessor and has an 11 mm increased ground clearance. Don’t think that you can get into the mud with that, but that height can also come in handy in the city.

The new Aygo sits on a trimmed-down version of the Yaris’ TNGA-B platform. However, the car also grows considerably in length. 23.5 cm to be exact, for a total of 3.7 meters. In comparison, a Yaris is now 3.94 meters long. The new Aygo is 1.74 meters wide and 1.51 meters high and has a wheelbase that is 9 cm longer than before at 2.43 meters.

design

In the form of the Aygo X Prologue, we were already presented with an Aygo harbinger this spring. That turns out to be quite accurate. The final Aygo X is also slightly more rounded in shape than its predecessor, which, funny enough, in contrast to the Aygo X, has a large ‘X’ on its nose. The new front looks a bit more serious and is still characterized by the fact that there is no grille between the headlights. In more expensive versions, those headlights are now equipped with LED dipped beam, while the number of wipers on the windscreen doubles to two.

Toyota transfers the Bi-Tone concept, in which part of the body is executed in a contrasting color, to the Aygo. Unlike the RAV4, for example, this is not just about the roof, but about the entire load-bearing part of the body. The black runs from the roof through the C-pillar to the sill. This color scheme is of course not standard, but we find it in the more expensive versions of the new Aygo.

17- or 18-inch wheels

The ‘rough’ character of this extra tough Aygo is underlined by wheel arch extensions, which are standard. The wheel arches themselves are quite large to accommodate wheels measuring at least 17 inches. At an additional cost, 18 inches is also possible. Back doors are also always present, but are quite small. They keep their hinged windows. The all-glass tailgate may also remain. He contributes to an ass very reminiscent of outgoing Aygo, even though everything is new, of course.

Room

Behind that recognizable flap is a luggage space of 231 liters. Not much in an absolute sense, but nicely 60 liters more than before. In addition, the loading floor is actually larger, so that you can really use that extra space. In the back seat, the gain is limited, if it is there at all. Take a good look at the video on this page: it’s certainly not great for adults here.

Technology

Everything is much better up front. The interior looks considerably more mature than before, while still retaining a healthy dose of playfulness. We see this, for example, in the oval-shaped ‘hole’ that houses the 7- or 9-inch touchscreen. That screen itself is pleasantly serious, because it is just the system from the Yaris. This means, for example, that wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are possible. The MyT app for your phone can now also be combined with the Aygo.

The climate control button clusters and steering wheel controls look mature and are the gateway to mature functions. For example, the Aygo is available with automatic climate control and the car comes with a Toyota Safety Sense package as standard. That includes a whole host of safety aids, including lane assist and… adaptive cruise control! That is quite a step, because until now the Aygo was by definition not available with cruise control.

Famous engine

The only place where there really isn’t any big news to report is under the hood. That is where the one-liter three-cylinder that we have known from the Aygo for so long, still with 72 hp. Still, there is news on a technical level, because the Aygo will be available with a CVT automatic transmission for the first time. In terms of consumption, it is hardly inferior to its manual brother.

There is also no hybrid version. Such a car would probably narrow the gap with the Yaris too much. Speaking of that hole: the new Aygo is available from €15,995. That is considerably more than before, although Toyota reports that the standard equipment is also significantly improving. In addition to a comparable ‘old’ Aygo, the price difference is limited to €400 according to the brand, but we will of course investigate that as soon as the price list is fully released. Then it will also become known how the private lease rates, which are very important for this segment, will turn out. Just a little patience: the Toyota Aygo X will arrive in the Netherlands around April 2022.
