Sharing an Animoji as a gif has its advantages. Unfortunately, Apple does not support this option, but you can add this function with a small detour. We show how it works.
How to make an Animoji gif
Sending an Animoji with music in the background is nice, but sometimes you don’t need a sound for the message you want to convey. In that case, a GIF is more useful than a video, for example because a GIF is played automatically and uses less data.
All you need (besides an iPhone X) is the Workflow app. With this app (which Apple recently took over) you can automate certain tasks of your iPhone. This means you don’t have to convert a video to a gif file every time, Workflow does that for you. If you have Workflow installed (via this link) you can get started.

Step 1: Record an Animoji video
Since Apple put the animated emoji in iMessage, you will need to record the video here first as you always do. When you are satisfied with the result, press and hold the video to save it to your Camera Roll.
Step 2: Add the correct Workflow to the app
Now open the Workflow app. Tap on ‘Gallery’ and then on the magnifying glass to open the search function. Enter ‘Convert Animoji To GIF’ as the search term here. If all goes well, the correct Workflow will now appear. Tap it to add it. Can’t find the Workflow? Then you can also fill in all the steps in the screenshot above manually.
Step 3: Use the Workflow to create a GIF
Open Workflow and find the newly added Workflow in the overview. Tap the Play button to start it. Then a screen will pop up asking you to choose an Animoji video. Choose the video you just saved to your Camera Roll and let the app do the rest. The result is an Animoji gif file that you can easily share with others.
