A ‘real’, a crossover and a four-door coupe
Corvette will become a separate brand within General Motors from 2025 and as such will make fast electric cars. That writes the American Car and Driver after speaking to an insider. According to the source, the first models are a four-door coupe, a crossover and a sports car. The latter would be ‘the next Corvette’, which should make the Corvette with combustion engines forget.
General Motors is separating the Corvette model name from Chevrolet and using it as a sub-brand for performance-oriented electric cars by 2025, Car and Driver reports. Now we already knew that there would be an electric Corvette. Whether that is a car based on the current C8 Corvette or a completely new one is still unclear. However, the source on which Car and Driver relies now reports that an electric sports car from Corvette will be placed on GM’s Ultium platform, but that is most likely about the ‘C9’ generation of the Corvette.
In any case, the current Corvette will soon be available as a hybrid. In addition to the extra fast Z06 variant and the even faster ZR1 (both with combustion engines only), GM is also reportedly launching two (plug-in) hybrid models based on the C8, with two different amounts of power. They would be called E-Ray. It is possible that the current Corvette will eventually also become an all-electric version, but we are betting on the aforementioned electric Corvette sports car based on GM’s Ultium technology for the introduction of such a variant. An electric ‘C9’ on a completely new basis for Corvette, in other words.
Crossover and four-door coupe
The sports car will undoubtedly be the halo car of the ‘new’ brand, but there is more news. The Corvette brand will also build other types of cars, which are initially a four-door coupé and a crossover. They are given their own designs and must therefore be easily recognizable as a car of the new Corvette. The Americans are betting on the higher regions of the market in terms of performance and technology. Their EVs will therefore have everything Corvette thinks it will have in 2025: particularly energy-dense batteries, 350 kW charging, an 800 V architecture, et cetera. The result of the sum of those parts will become apparent in the run-up to 2025.
