‘Costs of electric car are slightly more favorable than petrol car’

Not only fuel prices rose sharply last year, electricity prices were also on the rise. Electric driving therefore also became more expensive than before, but research by ANWB shows that the total costs are still lower than with a petrol car.

Those who start driving electrically probably do so largely out of love for their own wallet. Whether it really saves a lot of money depends, for example, on which EV you buy, whether you have received a purchase subsidy and how you usually charge. On average, an electric car is still cheaper than a petrol car, according to research by the ANWB.

In 2021, according to the ANWB, the average ‘Total Cost of Ownership’ of an electric car was below that of a petrol car for the first time. In 2022 that was also the case, according to the ANWB. Taking into account matters such as depreciation, maintenance, consumption costs, insurance and motor vehicle tax (from which EVs are currently exempt) you came to 61.4 cents per kilometer for an electric car and 63.4 cents per kilometer last year. A difference of 2 cents per kilometer.

The ANWB explains how it arrived at these numbers. “We compare the average km costs of middle class petrol cars with those of middle class electric cars. This is based on a service life of 4 years and driving 15,000 km per year. For the calculation we use an “average new car”, according to the ANWB . “The average car is determined by combining the total supply in the middle class segment (per fuel type) with the sales numbers. The more a make/type/version is sold, the more weight it carries in the calculation of the average. This creates a ‘ weighted virtual average car’ for which we then calculate the total car costs.” For charging the EV, an average charging mix has been assumed.
