cracking fingers

I have developed a habit for years, namely cracking my finger knuckles. Sometimes I have a real urge to crack my fingers. Why that need? Is this unhealthy? Many say that the consequences are felt later in life. Is this correct? I am 30 years old and have been cracking my fingers for over 10 years.

Answer

Best,

“Cracking” fingers can’t hurt as far as we know. It is the displacement of fluid or air in your joints within the joint capsule. The moisture/air that jumps happens with a small “crack”. It is also often assumed that a vacuum is created that is suddenly filled.

The need to “squat” can be compared to a long-held position that you want to stop, like sitting down when you have to sit still for an hour in a chair. When the air/moisture is mobilized, the feeling would be gone. .

Kind regards,
