‘Must prevent this’

The GP of Azerbaijan is sometimes very exciting and sometimes not at all. Sunday’s was one of the second category. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes that Formula 1 should ask itself how it can be improved.
Formula 1 had all kinds of ingredients for a big F1 party last weekend. It was the first race weekend in less than a month and we saw the premiere of a new sprint race format, which should guarantee more action in the GP weekend. Still, many people have the aftertaste that it was mainly a boring Grand Prix, especially on Sunday. Moreover, the renewed sprint race format does not seem to be very warmly received. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff thinks Formula 1 should ask itself what works and what doesn’t.
“It was not a thriller today,” Wolff said via Sunday after the race Motorsport.com. “There was just no overtaking, even when there was a lot of pace difference. We have to analyze the weekend with the sprint format, but at the end of the day it all comes down to the racing itself. You need fierce battles. I think one of the highlights was that George and Max could fight it out, but you didn’t have any of that today.”
Wolff clearly questions the effect of the 2022 regulations: “We really need to look at how we can prevent a boring race. Even if you are within two tenths of each other, it is still very difficult or even impossible to overtake when the other makes no mistakes.” In a sense, he repeats the criticism of his driver Lewis Hamilton. He also stated last month that the regulation change has not had the desired effect. “It may have gotten a little bit better, but it didn’t bring what was expected, so there are still some things to improve for the future,” said the seven-time world champion at the time.
