Cupra is growing, Seat is shrinking

Cupra had its best year ever in 2022. Last year, the brand delivered no less than 93 percent more cars than a year earlier.

Cupra was of course known as the sporty label of Seat until 2018, but for several years now it has been a separate brand that, in the form of the Formentor, even sells a car with a body that you will not find with other brands of the Volkswagen Group. In 2021, Cupra delivered 97,300 cars worldwide. Last year there were no fewer than 152,900. So we are talking about an increase of 92.7 percent. Seat is still a lot bigger. Seat delivered 232,700 cars in 2022, a small 41 percent less than in 2021. According to Seat, this has to do with problems in the supply chain.

The Cupra Formentor was Cupra’s most popular car with 97,600 units delivered. No less than 64 percent of all Cupras sold was a Formentor. De Born is in second place with 41,400 units. Germany is the largest market for Cupra (58,400 units, +90 percent), followed by the United Kingdom (14,400 units, +87.4 percent) and Spain (13,600 units, +24 percent). Last year, 2,752 Cupra cars were registered in the Netherlands. The majority of these were an electric Born (2,452 units). Cupra is launching a new model this year: the electric Tavascan.

The Arona was the most popular car at Seat. The brand sold 71,000 units (-34 percent). In second place is the Ibiza (51,300 units, -46.4 percent), followed by the Leon (41,500 units, -47.3 percent). Last year, 5,094 new Seats were registered in the Netherlands. Here the Ibiza was the most popular (1,638 units).
