Cupra Terramar and electric Tavascan already in Europe

The Cupra Terramar and the electric Tavascan will not be launched until 2024. Nevertheless, the first copies have already been registered in Europe. This is evident from a look at the Spanish sales figures.

In the middle of last year, Cupra showed not one and not two, but three completely new models that it will market until 2025. One of these is the fully electric UrbanRebel, a compact electric crossover that, like the yet to be revealed compact sister models from Volkswagen and Skoda, will be placed on the new MEB Small platform. The Cupra UrbanRebel is only scheduled for 2025, but Cupra launched two new models a year earlier: the Terramar and the electric Tavascan. Since the calendar is only set to March 2023, we still have to wait roughly a year for those cars. But in Spain, the first Terramar and Tavascan have already been registered.

The Asociación Nacional de Fabricantes de Automóviles y Camiones (ANFAC) – the Spanish equivalent of RAI Association – has shed extensive light on the ups and downs of the Spanish car market and industry. For example, 71,001 new passenger cars were registered in Spain in February, more than 19 percent more than in the same month last year. This brings the annual total for the first two months of 2023 to 138,039 cars, 32.1 percent more than in the same period last year. The Spanish car market has also got off to a good start. More interesting is what exactly was signed in February.

For example, ANFAC reports that 9,072 passenger cars with an electrified powertrain were registered in February, 33 percent more than in February 2022. Sales of fully electric passenger cars are increasing in Spain, but the market share remains small. In February, 4,239 electric cars were registered, 48 percent more than in February last year. Six of those cars newly chained in February are still far from being officially on the market. The figures from ANFAC show that six copies of the electric Cupra Tavascan were registered in February. The Cupra Terramar – Cupra’s sister model of the next generation Audi Q3 – also appears in the list of new cars signed in February. There are three copies. Unlike the Tavascan, the Terramar is not an electric model. These are probably early pre-production versions that will hit the road for testing. It’s not earth-shattering, but it sure is interesting!

Cupra is not doing surprisingly well in its home country of Spain. In February 1,259 Cupras were registered, of which 362 a Leon and 751 a Formentor. The Cupra Born made it to 121 registrations in February. The best-selling car in Spain in February was the Dacia Sandero (2,427 units), followed by the Seat Arona (2,385 units), Peugeot 2008 (1,906 units) and Seat Ateca (1,713 units). Furthermore, the Seat Ibiza is in the Top 10, in seventh place (1,593 units).
