Customize Dock on Mac Computer

Set up a Mac computer’s Dock from scratch. Because who wouldn’t want to create their own style?

The Dock is the icon bar of programs on the Mac computer. By default, this bar is at the bottom of the Desktop. Use this bar to quickly open programs or go to folders on the computer. The Dock can be set up entirely by yourself.

Add an application to the Dock like this (from Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion):

  • On the Dock, click finder (the face icon).
  • click on apps (macOS 10.15 Catalina or later) or Programs (macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier).
  • Click the icon of the program you want to add to the Dock.
  • Hold down the mouse button and drag the icon to the Dock.
  • Release the mouse button where you want to add the icon to the Dock.

Remove a program from the Dock as follows:

  • On the Dock, click the icon of the program you want to remove.
  • Hold down the mouse button and drag the icon to the Trash.
  • The text ‘Remove from Dock’ appears. Release the mouse button.

The look of the Dock can also be customized:

  • Click the Apple logo in the top left of the menu bar Apple logo.
  • click on System Preferences > dock or Dock and menu bar.
  • Adjust several things here, such as the size of the icons and where the Dock is on the Desktop.
  • After changing the settings, click away from the screen via the red circle.

The settings are saved automatically. Also watch our video on the customizations you can do on the Dock.
