Daihatsu has presented crazy concept cars that should actually make their debut in January at the Tokyo Auto Salon. That party is canceled, but that does not make the newcomers any less fun.
The Tokyo Auto Salon is an annual auto show where Japanese car manufacturers and tuners show their latest wares to the public. The auto show, not to be confused with the Tokyo Motor Show, was due to open its gates on January 15, but that will not continue in the usual way due to the risk of further spread of the corona virus. The Tokyo Auto Salon will be a digital party and Daihatsu will be present with five crazy concept cars.
Daihatsu Copen Spider
Although Daihatsu only exposed its five crazy little ones from all angles during the ‘Virtual Auto Salon’, the brand does already release the first photos of its newcomers. Unhindered by any embarrassment, Daihatsu presents fiercely dressed and refurbished versions of existing models. The best of the bunch is perhaps the Copen Spider, a two-seater with a low windshield and two ‘bumps’ behind the headrests. The Copen Spider is based on the Copen with the classic-looking Cero changeable carriage. In 2018, Daihatsu already showed a coupé version of that Copen ‘Cero’.
Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo Sporza
More crazy concept fun comes in the form of the Hijet Jumbo Sporza. Yes, a cut-open and speedster-like version of the Hijet. The Hijet, a company car of kei-car format. The Hijet Jumbo Sporza is lowered, has heavy bumpers, sidepipes, a low windscreen and a real livery.
Daihatsu Taft Crossfield
Daihatsu also picks up the Taft, the crossover-like kei-car that the brand has been selling since last year. The Taft awakens for the Virtual Auto Salon as Taft Crossfield. The block box has heavy bumpers, sturdy wheel arches and relatively heavy looking off-road rubber.
Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo Camper
Then there is the Hijet Jumbo Camper, a nod to the second generation Hijet, which, with its closed wheels and round headlights, seems to have driven away from another era. Finally, Daihatsu hits the Thor against the asphalt. The micro MPV with sliding doors is arguably the least tastefully modified version of the bunch.
