If Defender and G-class are too obvious

The Japanese Damd has made it to these pages before with its special creations, but has now outdone itself. Once again using the Suzuki Jimny as a basis, the company presents creative reincarnations of the Lancia Delta Integrale and the Renault 5 Turbo. Or non-turbo, in this case.
Damd’s retro sweets are not only unique, but also terribly Japanese. We mean that in a positive way, of course, because in Japan they are never afraid to see the humor in a car and convert models to another model in a funny, yet surprisingly accurate way. Damd can do that like no other. The Suzuki Jimny was grabbed here before, and then rolled onto the streets as a lookalike of the Mercedes G-class and Land Rover Defender. Suzuki’s also very square all-rounder is of course suitable for this like no other.
The new retro Jimnys from Damd, which will be shown at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon, are a lot less obvious. For example, Damd converts the Jimny into a cartoonish ‘remake’ of the square, but also much lower Lancia Delta from the 1980s. Although the logos are missing, Damd makes no secret of it: the creation is called ‘Little Δ’ , or ‘little Delta’. We see the characteristic round headlights of the Delta, but also the typical Lancia grille. The ‘HF Integrale’ part is expressed in heavily flared wheel arches and a stubborn, almost upright roof spoiler.
The white OZ wheels also fit perfectly into the rally image that goes with the Lancia, but Damd also mounts them on the second feat on a Jimny basis. That is the ‘Little cinq’, or the ‘little 5’. The front bumper and side screens appear to be shared with the ‘Delta’, but it is still clear that Damd wanted to copy the Renault 5 Turbo from 1980. The optically extended ‘hood’ – secretly part of the grille – and square headlights give the Jimny a matching front. The word ‘TURBO’ on the side is also very nice: the Renault 5 also had that, but Damd has a subtle ‘non’ above it.
Non TURBO!
Damd has been busy and can’t keep up with the two Jimnys. For example, the Toyota Hiace van gets the Defender treatment and Damd hoists two small Daihatsu Atrai vans in an American-looking retro jacket. Nice though!
