The market share for EVs was in September 2020 at 25% equal to that of cars with a diesel engine for the first time, according to data from research firm Jato. This figure also includes (mild) hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Tesla still has the best-selling EV with the Model 3, but in total the Volkswagen Group sells the most fully electric cars, according to Jato.
An important comment must therefore be made in Jato’s research, because the research bureau also counts mild hybrids among the EVs. Since many manufacturers currently equip their petrol-powered models with such a powertrain, it is logical that the market share of EVs will increase if one takes the (mild) hybrids. According to Jato, they represent a market share of 53 percent in total EV sales. However, this does not alter the fact that a clear trend is visible in the car market: diesel is rapidly losing ground. Today, consumers are more likely to opt for a car with some form of electric drive than a diesel. Both types of drive take up about 25 percent of the total market share, and the intersection has now been reached.
Compared to September last year, the car industry showed a slightly better month with 1.3 million cars compared to 1.28 million cars sold. Toyota is still the market leader in EVs with a market share of 32 percent by Jato’s definition, but Volkswagen is well on its way to catch up. In terms of sales of purely electric cars, for example, Volkswagen and Renault saw an increase of 352 and 211 percent respectively compared to last year, in the case of Volkswagen a more than tripling. However, the Tesla Model 3 is still the best-selling EV with 15,702 units sold.
A confirmation
In fact, Jato’s research mainly confirms the trends that have been going on for some time in the automotive world: the EV and the SUV are gaining ground. Viewed across the vehicle types, the SUV has a market share of no less than 41.3 percent. Please note: the research agency also uses a broad definition in this respect, because this also includes crossovers such as the Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008 and Ford Puma.
