Diesel price reaches new ‘milestone’

The price of a liter of diesel in the Netherlands has reached a new record. For the first time, the Average National Recommended Retail Price is above €1.80 per litre.

The new milestone that many are undoubtedly unhappy about has been reached: a liter of diesel now costs on average (GLA) €1.80. This is evident from data from United Consumers, which tracks the national recommended prices of the major oil companies. Less than a week ago, a new record was also reached, when a liter of diesel cost €1.772 (GLA). The average national suggested retail price for a liter of Euro 95 (E10) is now €2.13 and LPG costs €1.14 per litre.

United Consumers director Paul van Selms does not rule out the possibility that a liter of diesel will cost more than 2 euros per liter, as happened with petrol. “That is not the expectation, but anything is possible. With the current inflation, all prices are going up”, says Van Selms. There is also a high demand for diesel. Tensions between Russia and Ukraine do the rest. As a result of these rising tensions, the oil price is also rising. “Russia is not only a major supplier of gas, but also of petroleum,” said Van Selms. “Traders anticipate by hoarding.” And that drives up prices.

There is already speculation about an oil price above 100 dollars a barrel. “If that is the case for a day or a week, then that doesn’t say much. If that becomes structural, you have to learn to live with it. But we are far from being rid of our petrol and diesel addiction.” The electric vehicle fleet is growing, but not so fast that fossil fuels become superfluous. It is difficult to say whether the peak moment for the diesel price is in sight. “Actually, €1.80 per liter is no longer normal. But what is still normal these days?” The price of a liter of petrol passed the €2 per liter limit for the first time in the past year. That seemed unthinkable before, but not much later the limit of €2.10 was broken.
