As long as man walks upright, the Dodge Charger is a purebred muscle car with a hefty petrol engine and a good dose of straightforward, somewhat clumsy power. With this Charger Daytona SRT Concept, however, Dodge is looking ahead to a future in which the Charger is completely electric.

The Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept is a special study model for several reasons. First of all, the Charger that you can still buy from Dodge is a four-door sedan. With this Charger Daytona SRT Concept, Dodge is going back to the Charger base and that means it’s just a coupe. This time not with a loose valve, but with a hatchback valve. A real coupé, after all, the rear window goes with it. Also, the Daytona part of the name is interesting. The original Charger Daytona is of course characterized by its huge rear wing. This electric preview of the Charger future also has an interesting wing, although you can find it near the hood.

The special ‘R-Wing’ on the front.

R-Wing

For the Charger nose you will find a spoiler that Dodge calls the R-Wing, which is optically hidden in the design in a special way. This directs air over the hood to generate additional downforce. The Charger has to do without a B-pillar and that is also a direct reference to the Charger past. Its overall design is very reminiscent of that of the second-generation Charger that Dodge sold between 1968 and 1970. With this, the Charger also seems to somewhat fill the gap that the current generation Challenger will leave behind in the long run. Also interesting are the badges that Dodge sticks on the study model. Among other things, we see ‘Banshee’ badges that resemble the well-known Hellcat badges. The Americans even give the concept car ‘Fratzog’ badges, logos that Dodge also applied to models decades ago.

Sound

Dodge does not share extensive technical information yet. In fact, the brand doesn’t even mention how powerful the Charger Daytona SRT is. Just assume that you’re not exactly short on power in the final Electric Charger. Dodge gives the Charger Daytona SRT Concept what it calls the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, a system that produces what the brand says is intense sound that resonates in a sound box in the back of the car. The interior looks quite production-ready. We see a 12.3-inch infotainment screen turned towards the driver, a digital instrumentation and just a few more physical buttons.

Current Charger and Challenger generations will be out of production at the end of 2023. Then it will become clear how the successors actually dry up. Is the US market ready for electric muscle car? Who knows. Ford also uses the model name Mustang for an electric SUV and with the new generation Chevrolet Corvette that has a mid-engine, the American consumer has more recently seen how a sacred house can be successfully smashed to the surface.
