My question is whether the underwater city of Atlantis is real or just a MYTH?
Asker: Nils, 13 years old
Answer
The myth of Atlantis is a literary invention of the Greek philosopher Platon (fourth century BC). This continent in the Atlantic Ocean, which, according to the myth, perished about 12,000 years ago (along with the rest of the world at that time, except Egypt), never existed and there are no remnants of it on the seabed.
This does not alter the fact that the story has always captured the imagination of artists and that hundreds of stories, novels, films and comics have appeared about Atlantis over the centuries.
A brief overview of these works can be found in Herbert Verreth’s article, Atlantis from Platon to Disney, in Tetradio. Greece Center Magazine, 12, 2003, p. 49-80.
