Lick the yoghurt lid or not? You have probably heard many times that you shouldn’t do that. We explain what is about the warning.

If you like to eat yogurt, you know the problem: As soon as the cup is open, a not so small part of the yoghurt gets stuck on the aluminum lid. This is reluctant to waste that and therefore often licks it briefly. However, many think that due to the aluminum coating of the lid, it is unhealthy to lick yoghurt lids. But how harmful is aluminum?

Aluminum is a light metal that causes damage to our body in too high quantities. According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), aluminum is suspected of damageing the central nervous system, related to Alzheimer’s and triggering cancer. According to the previous state of research, both are unlikely, but not excluded.

On the other hand, what has been scientifically proven: Anyone who absorbs too much aluminum or aluminum connections into the body in the long run can damage their kidneys, liver and bones.

According to the consumer advice center, we take up aluminum primarily through certain foods, but also from other sources:

  • Instant Tee drinks and tea drinks
  • Cocoa and chocolate products

  • Raw food salad
  • Multi -grain bread and rolls

But also:

  • Vaccines
  • drug
  • Lipstick
  • Toothpast
  • Aluminum -containing antiperspirants, i.e. deodorants
  • Grill bowls, aluminum foil and Co.

Aluminum is problematic that components quickly detach from the light metal if it is exposed to salt or acidic components. For this reason, the BFR recommends that acidic or salty foods not be stored in aluminum shells or film.

How dangerous is it to lick the yoghurt lid?

It is not dangerous to lick the yoghurt lid. Because: The yogurt does not come into contact with the aluminum.

A plastic layer on the aluminum, which is harmful to health under strict conditions, prevents the yogurt from getting in touch with the light metal. This procedure is regulated in the food and needs law law. It states that packaging fabrics must not transferred to food or their surfaces. The exception of this are shares that are inevitable from a technical point of view, but are harmless to health. Manufacturers even make themselves punishable if, for example, they illegally apply preservatives or other questionable substances on yoghurt cups.

However, a small amount of aluminum can detach if the plastic layer is damaged. But even then you don’t need to worry about your health because it would be a very small amount of aluminum. If you are healthy, you also outgo a large part of the light metal.

Nevertheless, for the sake of your tongue to lick the yoghurt lid because it can have sharp edges.

Sustainable and healthy alternative: make yogurt yourself

You do not have to deal with the problem of yoghurt cover if you choose the healthier and less packaging variant: a homemade natural yogurt with fruits, cereals or honey. So you avoid aluminum and other unhealthy additives contained in industrially manufactured yogurt.
