Download faster with Firefox

Download faster with Firefox

The speed at which you download files mainly depends on the maximum speed that your internet provider offers and the quality of the internet connection. But if you use Firefox, you may not get the available download speed unless you change some settings. This is how you download faster with Firefox.

When you download a file via one connection, the speed is not optimally used. But if you bring in a large file via multiple connections that all download a segment of the file, the download speed is significantly increased.

In Firefox you have to enable ‘http pipelining’ for this. That is a tweak where multiple http requests are sent over a tcp connection, without waiting for the corresponding replies.

Open Firefox and type in the address bar about:config. A window will appear alerting you to the risks of changing the advanced configuration preferences. Click the button to accept the risk and continue.

Firefox warns you to open the advanced settings.

Adjust preferences

Here you have to adjust four preferences. First you type network.http.pipelining in the search bar of the advanced preferences. Select the option Boolean and click the plus button. Then you type network.http.proxy.pipelining in the search bar, select again Boolean and click the plus button again. Then type network.http.pipelining.maxrequests in the search bar. Select String and click the plus button again. Here you change the setting 32.

Confirm this by clicking the blue button. Finally you type ng.layout.initialpaint.delay in the search bar. Select String and click the plus button. Change the setting to 0. Click on the blue button to confirm.

Now restart Firefox. As a result, the download speed of Firefox is set to the maximum of your internet connection.

Set the ‘pipelining maximum requests’ to 32.

With extension

Another option is to install the Turbo Download Manager extension. Not only will this add-on speed up download speed, it will also improve download stability on low-quality networks. In addition, the manager will resume aborted downloads when the download process is interrupted. This means you no longer have to start from scratch.

type about:addons in the address box. Then type Turbo download manager in the search box. When Firefox has found the add-on, click To add. Restart Firefox and the next time you download a file, Firefox will download it at top speed as well.

Instead of changing the settings, you can also install an add-on.
