Drinking enough water is important. But how much should we drink to get through the day healthy? This is what a study says and we give you more drinking water tips.

Nothing works in the body without water. Water is part of all body cells and is necessary for the metabolism.

Water regulates body temperature, not only when we sweat in summer. If we drink too little, it harms our organs – all. We also need enough liquid for brain, mucous membranes, digestion and kidneys.

Drinking water: So much is good for you

How much water do we need every day? One, two or three liters? Depending on the age and life situation, for example during pregnancy or lactation, the German Society for Nutrition recommends taking up between 400 milliliters (for infants) and around 1,500 milliliters of liquid every day. With solid food and oxidation water, you take up additional water during the day. So you have to drink actively less than the commonly known two liters – and only if you are thirsty.

This shows another mistake: Many believe that you have to drink before a feeling of thirst even occurs. In this way, the body should constantly be supplied with sufficient liquid. However, nothing is about this argument, explains nutritionist Uwe Knop at Spiegel Online: “Thirst is a signal of the body. He wants to say: I need water now, not later and not later.”

However, this does not necessarily apply to small children and older people – they often have problems with their feeling of thirst. It makes sense to make sure that you drink enough even without thirst.

A study from 2022 confirms this: According to the results, most people only need 1.5 to 1.8 liters of water per day. More on this: drink 2 liters of water a day? Study clears up with common recommendation

But be careful: if you go sweating a lot, for example in high heat or strenuous physical activity, your water requirement can increase significantly. The consumer center explains: “Here the fluid requirement can increase to three to four times.” In such cases, even 2 liters are clearly too little. More tips for drinking in the heat can be found here: Drinking in heat: Are two liters of water enough?

Where does the two-liter rule come from?

As a rule, you should drink as much water as you are thirsty. The more you sweat, the more liquid has to be added to the body. But where does the “two-liter rule” come from? As Plusminus reports, there is probably the skillful marketing of large water manufacturers.

“Nestlé, Danone, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, the work with nutritionists, with health experts, with teachers, together-to promote her version of the ‘healthy drinking water’,” says environmental protection officer Maude Barlow at Plusminus.

Because schoolchildren supposedly drink too little, there is, for example, the “Drinking in class” campaign. Behind it is the association of the mineral well. Coca-Cola spreads seemingly serious tables and articles with exaggerated information on dehydration. With the in -house watermarks Apollinaris and Bonaqua, the group benefits from the fear of dehydration.

You should consider that when drinking water

Instead of force yourself to drink water, rely on your feeling of thirst. If possible, drink no bought water made of plastic bottles. It is better if you eat tap water. In Germany, the water from the line is of very good quality. So you can drink it carefree and do something good with it, save money and avoid plastic waste and long transport routes for bottled water.

If you prefer to drink water with carbon dioxide, a drinking water bubble could be interesting for you. For example from Sodastream, available online from Netto, MediaMarkt or Amazon.

On the go you can easily take a drinking bottle with you to fill up. Here we tell you which drinking bottles are best for on the go. In many German cities there are now refill stations, such as shops and restaurants in which you can fill up your bottle with water. Simply pay attention to the refill sticker. A card shows you where to find refill stations.
