From 1.57 percent to 4.13 percent

2023 is only a little over two months old, but that doesn’t stop us from comparing some numbers with last year. It is striking that Chinese car manufacturers sold significantly more cars than in January and February last year.
Chinese car manufacturers sold 2,513 passenger cars in the Netherlands in the past two months, according to the figures of Bovag and RDC. Set against the total number of passenger cars sold, this amounts to a market share of 4.13 percent. Last year they jointly amounted to 843 cars and a market share of 1.57 percent. The market share in the past two months was therefore more than 2.6 times higher than last year.
If we also include Polestar and Volvo as European brands under Chinese rule, this year’s market share is no less than 8.74 percent. Last year it was 6.48 percent. The growth of the Chinese market share this year is largely due to the arrival of new models or even complete brands that were not there at the beginning of last year. For example, the BYD Atto 3 is the second most popular Chinese car so far this year with 142 units sold and there was none at the time. The MG 4 (140 units) and MG 5 (69 units) are also new.
The absolute top seller is the Lynk & Co 01. There were already 1,894 of them on Dutch registration this year. Last year there were 731 in the first two months. The 01 alone accounted for more than 3 percent market share in the past two months. If we do not include the 01, the Chinese would not have a 4.13 percent, but a 1.02 percent market share, which is considerably less. However, the growth of the Chinese market share compared to last year is greater. Without the 01 last year, that was only 0.21 percent, so we are talking about a fivefold increase.
