Dutch Omoda is taking action against car brand Omoda

The Chinese car giant Chery wants to enter the Dutch market with the car brand Omoda, but that produces some crooked faces. After all, there has been a fashion company in the Netherlands with that name for years. It is now taking action against the Chinese.

Here in the Netherlands you may have known the name Omoda for much longer than since June of this year, when it turned out that Chery is bringing a car brand with that name in this direction. Omoda is a Dutch fashion retailer that has been active since 2000. We therefore wondered whether there would be some crooked faces at the Dutch Omoda due to the arrival of the car brand Omoda. However, according to Omoda (the car brand), this would not cause any problems, because both parties are active in completely different sectors. It would therefore not pose a legal problem. Omoda (the fashion company) does not agree with that.

“We have already indicated several times to Chery that this is the case,” said a spokesperson for the Dutch Omoda ANP. “The Chinese car brand is making improper use of the Omoda brand with the introduction of its new car model on the European market. Omoda has therefore now started a so-called opposition procedure, with which brands can object to the registration of newer brands. “Over the past 23 years we have As a Zeeland family business, we worked very hard to build up the Omoda brand name. This makes us a recognizable name for many Dutch people as one of the most progressive fashion retailers,” says the spokesperson. He also emphasizes that direct contact with Chery and Omoda is no longer fruitful.

Omoda, of the cars in this case, wants to tempt consumers here in the Netherlands in 2024 with the Omoda 5 EV, or E5. This is a medium-sized electric SUV with a relatively sloping roofline, with a WLTP range of up to 450 km. We recently had the opportunity to briefly meet the Omoda E5 in its home country of China.
