Not allowed to drive anyway

The police are increasingly catching Dutch people driving without a valid driver’s license or license plate. This is reported by ANP on the basis of an analysis of police figures.
In the first six months of this year, the Dutch police registered more than 6,400 offenses in which someone was behind the wheel without the correct papers or permission. This includes driving without a (valid) driver’s license and driving with a false license plate.
According to ANP, no other traffic violation has seen such a strong increase in the number of fines issued. The police speak of “less willingness to comply with the traffic rules”. In the first half of 2013, 2,600 offenses were registered in which someone drove a vehicle without the correct papers or permission. In 2019, there were already almost 3,700. An increase was also observed in corona years 2020, 2021 and part of 2022. According to the police, in those years there was mainly a temporary increase in people who went out without a driver’s license or participated in street races. “Fewer drivers therefore committed more or different types of violations.”
