You want to use ear candles to clean your ears? Good idea, but please use with caution and never alone! Find out here how to use ear candling and what the risks are.

What do ear candles bring?

Ear candles are thin, 20 to 30 centimeter long sticks that are hollow on the inside. they consist of beeswax, essential oils, herbs and cotton. At the bottom of the ear candle is a piece of aluminum or some other filter that is designed to prevent hot wax from dripping down the ear canal. Important: Never buy ear candles without this safety filter!

Ear candles are supposed to free the ears from earwax, meanwhile they are also often used in wellness treatments. How the candles work:

  • The candle is put in the ear and lit.
  • The rising heat in the ear candle creates a negative pressure.
  • The earwax comes out due to the negative pressure.
  • A pleasant side effect is the equalization of pressure in the ears. For many, this is very relaxing, which is why ear candles are said to help relieve stress.

Critics say that the negative pressure of the ear candle is too low to effectively rid the ear of earwax. However, the candle can at least help that ear cleaning to prepare or facilitate. Manufacturers recommend lighting several ear candles in a row to get the ear really clean.

No experiments: use ear candles correctly

You should definitely not use ear candles when you are alone. One second person should help you or at least observe the process for safety. That’s how it works:

  1. lie on your side
  2. Put the ear candle vertically in the ear.
  3. To be on the safe side, you can put a small towel around your ear, preferably damp. This is to catch any falling ash.
  4. Twist the ear candle into your ear with gentle pressure so that it stands upright and the ear canal sealed airtight.
  5. Light the ear candle. Warm smoke will now reach your ear.
  6. Let the ear candle burn down completely. Normally it stops burning on its own.

Place a glass of water next to it as a precaution, because ear candles can only be extinguished with water.
