Last year at Monterey Car Week in California, Acura unveiled the Precision EV Concept, heralding a new electric SUV. Now we are introduced to the production model in the same week: the Acura ZDX. From Honda’s luxury brand, but also from General Motors.

The striking cut of the side windows, the layout of the front and even the color scheme: the production ZDX takes almost everything from the concept car that preceded it last year. The Acura ZDX is an athletically proportioned SUV with a length of 5.02 meters. This makes it slightly longer than the SUVs that we see as very large in Europe, such as the Volvo XC90 and BMW X5. The Acura is only available with fully electric powertrains, but immediately in several variants. The blue car is the A-spec and basically has one electric motor on the rear axle. It delivers 340 American horsepower.

There is also an A-spec with two engines and four-wheel drive, but the power of that is not yet known. The ZDX Type S, shown in yellow, always has two engines and about 500 horsepower. It stands on 22 instead of 20-inch wheels, has air suspension and is of course a lot faster, although it is not yet known how fast exactly. Both cars have a rather immense battery with a capacity of 102 kWh. According to the American measurement method, the rear-wheel drive A-Spec comes 523 kilometers away, the four-wheel drive slightly less far and the Type S sticks to 463 kilometers. Other achievements: fast charging goes up to 190 kW and the Acura ZDX has a tow weight of almost 1,600 kg.

The most interesting thing about this new Acura isn’t even what it can do, but where it came from. Unlike other Acuras, this is not a full product of parent company Honda, but the result of a collaboration between Honda and General Motors. The Acura ZDX is on GM’s Ultium platform and is therefore a technical brother of, among others, the Cadillac Escalade IQ and Chevrolet Silverado EV, although the Acura is smaller. The GM origin is clearly visible in the interior. For example, the buttons on the steering wheel correspond to those of the Silverado, but there are also quite a few things from the GM shelves elsewhere in the interior. Not a disaster, as far as we’re concerned: the ZDX interior still looks luxurious and modern. The electric Acura ZDX will arrive at US dealers as early as early 2024.
