Electric ‘bicycle car’ Twike 5 is almost ready

The German company Twike will soon be launching a new version of its hybrid tricycle after years of development. The Twike 5 is a combination of an electric car and a bicycle and can reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. Production starts in the spring.

Whether you go cycling or by car is a choice that you no longer have to make with the Twike. The German company Twike (a contraction of the words twin and bike, twins and bicycle) simply combines that. The Twike 5 is actually a kind of fitness machine on wheels. By pedaling, the batteries are charged and you stay fit. If you bring a passenger, you can charge them even faster, because both seats are equipped with pedals. You steer with two levers that you move forward or backward. The top speed varies from 120 to 200 kilometers per hour. There is a choice of three battery packs, with a capacity of 15, 20, 25 or 30 kWh. Depending on the chosen battery pack, you can travel 150 to 500 kilometers electrically.

Nice cycling

The maximum speed that can be achieved also depends on the size of the batteries. The top speed of 200 km / h is only released after the Twike has driven 5,000 kilometers. Until then you have to do it with 130 km / h. The limiter does not go off until the manufacturer considers the vehicle owner suitable. 500 Twikes are being built. That will be lottery tickets for potential buyers, as 1,072 orders have already been placed with the manufacturer. Despite the built-in safety cage, it is undoubtedly a bit of a swallow to hit the road with this 495 kilo creation. However, there is hardly any doubt that the Twike is also allowed in the Netherlands. Previous Twikes received a type approval in the Netherlands and you can go (fast) with that too. For the Twike 5 you will lose between € 39,900 and € 49,900 in Germany, depending on the chosen battery pack.
