‘Electric Black Saturday’ expected in Germany

People who go on a winter sports holiday with an electric car and drive through Germany must take into account ‘charging traffic jams’ on Saturday 25 February. KPMG warns about this after its own research.

The ever-improving charging options and more usable range of modern electric cars mean that more and more Dutch people are going on holiday electrically. Also on a winter sports holiday, it turns out. This spring break ride there according to KPMG no fewer than 8,000 to 10,000 Dutch electric cars to Austria alone. Of course, they also drive through Germany and it could sometimes get busy at the charging stations there, the accountancy firm expects. So busy, in fact, that people speak of an ‘electric black Saturday’, next Saturday.

It’s like this: many winter sports enthusiasts from the south of the country return home on Saturday 25 February, while a fresh stream of holidaymakers from the center and north of the country is driving to the south. Based on the most popular departure times, KPMG expects these two ‘streams’ to converge in the Frankfurt area. Not a problem in itself, but for many a new load of electricity will be needed around that time. It is therefore expected that it will be connected in line at the charging stations in that area.

“If you have the option to leave on another day or to plan an overnight stay en route, you should definitely consider this”, warns KPMG’s Stijn de Groen in conversation with the AD. If that is not possible, you can also plan your charging stops around it. Then it is an idea, for example, to load at Mannheim or Würzburg and then again above Cologne (or vice versa, on the way there). The usually quieter and more easterly A45, which avoids Cologne, Bonn and Koblenz, may be an alternative route.
