Spyshots BMW 5 Series Touring

In the market for an electric BMW, but do you think the i4 is too slick, the i7 too big and you don’t need an SUV? Good news. BMW is coming this year with the fully electric i5. A Touring will also appear from that electric equivalent of the new 5-series.

More and more car manufacturers are venturing into an electric station wagon. MG was the first with the 5 Electric, but the Opel Astra Sportstourer Electric and Peugeot e-308 SW have already been announced and we know that Volkswagen and Audi are coming with electric station wagons. Furthermore, the Chinese Nio has such a model in the pipeline. What seems? BMW also comes with an electric station wagon.

BMW has a busy year ahead. After all, 2023 is the year in which we will not only get to know an all-new 5 Series, but also a new generation of the X2. Electrical i-derivatives of both models appear. The electric X2 will logically be called iX2 and will be presented before the end of this year, BMW reports. The electric equivalent of the 5 series is also coming this year: the i5. Just as the iX2 is an electric version of the X2 and the i7 is actually a 7 Series with an electric powertrain, the i5 will be an electric 5 Series. The new BMW 5 series with combustion engines will soon also be available as a Touring and there will also be an electric variant, BMW says. With the i5 Touring, the brand will soon have an important edge over competitor Mercedes-Benz. The BMW i5 Touring is on the roll for 2024.

Audi A6 Avant e-tron Concept

There will also be an Audi A6 Avant e-tron.

In the 5-series segment, Mercedes-Benz has the E-class. In addition, with the EQE, Mercedes-Benz offers a fully electric model that operates in the same class, but that does not share a single nut or screw with the E-class. The EQE is available as a slick five-door and has a higher brother in the form of the EQE SUV. Mercedes-Benz will soon not have an electric station wagon, unlike BMW and Audi. Audi in turn comes with a production version of the A6 e-tron Avant Concept. That study model immediately indicates with its name in which class it ends up.

The BMW i5 – which the brand is already showing with a cloth on it for the occasion – is therefore not on a platform entirely intended for EVs. After all, it shares its platform with the 5-series, which also comes on the market with mid-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. There will also be a new M5, but a so-called i5 will also appear according to BMW performance version. Perhaps count on the arrival of an i5 M50.
