‘Electric car cheaper than petrol car from 2027’

Electric cars are now on average even more expensive to purchase than a comparable petrol car, but the turning point is coming. In 2027 the time has come, analysts think.

The fact that electric cars will eventually become cheaper than petrol cars is mainly due to decreasing costs for the batteries. According to a report published by BloombergNEF, that specializes in electric vehicle analyzes. According to the report, production costs for family electric cars and SUVs will be lower than gasoline cars by 2026. A year later, the electric city car is also cheaper than the petrol variant. In 2030, the costs will even be 58 percent lower than in 2020.

According to the study, the lower costs cause a sharp increase in the demand for electric cars. In fact, it is predicted that the affordability of electric cars will lead to 100 percent of passenger car sales in Europe being electric by 2035. With the right measures, such as strengthening the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and stricter CO2 emission values for models with combustion engine, this should be possible, according to the report.

Green parties are using the document to point out that there must be a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars across Europe by 2035. A number of European countries want a ban on the sale of these models from 2030. Currently, 81 percent of 15,000 drivers in England believe that electric cars are currently too expensive to buy one today. BloombergNEF’s report was commissioned by Transport & Environment.
