The solution against cables on the sidewalk?

Electric car will soon be charged with … curb!

Are you tired of the charging cables lying half on the sidewalk? Then an innovative invention by the German Rheinmetall may soon offer a solution. The company has developed a curb with which you can charge your EV. You read that right.

Rheinmetall is a German company that not only has a large defense sector, but is also a supplier to the automotive industry. The company has presented a striking innovation: the curb loader. The curb loader is a curb in which the necessary mechanism is incorporated that actually transforms it into a charging station.

According to Rheinmetall, the curb loader offers several advantages. The innovative charger uses existing infrastructure and, among other things, takes up less space than the well-known regular charging stations. In addition, according to Rheinmetall, they are relatively cheap and curb loaders prevent charging cables lying over the pavement. The inventors claim that the electrified curbs offer a solution, especially in busy city centers.

You should be able to charge up to 22 kW with the curbside chargers. According to Rheinmetall, entire streets and parking lots can be equipped with the small chargers relatively easily. Because curbs can be easily removed, maintenance on the loaders should only take a few minutes, according to Rheinmetall. The company believes it can make a significant contribution to Germany’s plans to have at least one million public charging points by 2030. We are awaiting a response from Rheinmetall whether there are plans to bring the curbside loaders to the Netherlands in the future. We are also curious whether individuals and companies can purchase the curbside loaders, or whether they should mainly be installed in collaboration with local authorities.
